County Commission Communications
A Periodic Column Written by Ed Douglas, Presiding Commissioner

Congratulations...
to Local Candidates and Our Future as a County, State, and Nation
November 2016

I would like to congratulate the winners in the local county election, Western District County Commissioner Dave Mapel, Eastern Commissioner Alvin Thompson, and Sheriff Steve Cox. Also, I would like to thank the candidates who ran against these candidates for the professional manner in which they ran their campaigns and their willingness to serve our community.

I have had very good meetings with both new commissioners; and I am looking forward to working with both of them. We will miss the 28 years combined experience of Ken Lauhoff (20 years) and Todd Rodenberg (8 years), but from my discussions with both new commissioners, I am very optimistic concerning our future.

Although there are obvious hard feelings between Democrats and Republicans at the national level as a result of the recent election process, that is not the case at the county level. I want to assure everyone that my experience has been that party affiliation has no affect whatsoever in our day to day operations. We work for the betterment of the County - period - and party affiliation is irrelevant.

I have several close friends (including our current commissioners) who have different political views on key issues in our nation than I do; but, generally, when we talk through the facts on these important issues (and actually listen to the other person), we usually come up with common sense solutions we could all live with. That is the way it works at the county level - a lot of give and take, a lot of common sense - and reasonable solutions are the result. Wouldn't it be great if state and national government would work the same way?

President Obama made a very poignant statement the other day that I hope we will all take to heart when he said that we may be Democrats or Republicans or Libertarians or Independents but we are Americans first, and we should not forget this. Amen.
